MFA student Emily Jan creates effigies of the animals that dwell in the collective imagination of the West. Composed of everyday North American materials such as wool, recycled cloth, and found objects, they are the fantasy of the exotic fabricated from the materiality of the mundane.

She holds a BA in Theatre, Speech and Dance from Brown University (2000) and a BFA in Painting/Drawing from California College of the Arts (2009). Prior to moving to Montreal, she worked for a decade as an artist, designer, educator, and sometime journalist in the United States, South Africa, and Mexico.
